Explore Reykjavik

Iceland’s beautiful, striking landscape may draw you in, but lively, friendly Reykjavik will convince you to stay. This gorgeous capital city is ideal for families, nature lovers, adventure addicts and culture seekers, because it has something for everyone to enjoy. The town is easily navigable on foot, with most everything concentrated along central streets. The great outdoors takes center stage in this unique city of colorful houses, interesting attractions and intriguing landmarks.

With lava fields, geothermal pools, sweeping sea views and massive volcanoes all within easy reach, Reykjavik is a gateway of possibilities. The world’s northern-most capital has nearly 24-hours of daylight in the summertime, which is the perfect time to get a a glimpse of Icelandic life. Step into the Viking Age at the Settlement Exhibit with artifacts from the 9th-century. Rub elbows with the city's artists and writers in a lively pub, or venture to the immense National Museum — keeper of the country's most precious treasures.

Take your pick of cycling paths and coastal byways that are perfect for exploration. Favorite destinations include the Golden Circle, Mount Esja and Úlfarsfell Mountain. Farther afield, Laugavegur, Iceland's popular 88-mile hiking trail, connects the nature reserves Landmannalaugar and Thorsmork. And for those who want to explore even more of Iceland's unique landscape, there are glaciers, geysers, waterfalls, fjords and plenty of fascinating wildlife, including Icelandic horses and puffins.

Take the kids to the Reykjavík Zoo and Family Park, featuring a collection of wild and domestic Icelandic animals, as well as a family garden with several action-packed rides for children. In the Old Harbour area, kids will be enthralled with a visit to the high-octane Saga Museum. Add a tour or two to your package to go sightseeing in or around the city, catch sight of a geyser blasting 65 feet in the air, take a dip in the Blue Lagoon, walk inside a glacier, or witness the phenomenon of the Northern Lights.

By far the coolest street in Reykjavik is Laugavegur. This not-to-be-missed thoroughfare is a few quirky, creative blocks of shopping, innovative design, bookstores, vintage clothing boutiques, festive bars and restaurants with delicious cuisine. For serious bargain hunters, the indoor Kolaportid market held every weekend is where to find buys on handmade Icelandic clothing, food and toys.

Delta Vacations flight + hotel packages include round-trip airfare aboard a Delta Partner Airline to Keflavik International Airport (KEF). Taxis from the airport to the city center are expensive, so your best bet is to purchase airport express round-trip shared transfers or take the Flybus into town.
